Student Support in Middle School
In-Class Support
Middle school teachers seek to create a classroom environment in which every student is inspired, challenged, and able to succeed. As needed, teachers work directly with students and their parents to provide reasonable accommodations for students; for example, offering extra time to complete classwork at home or movement breaks during morning lessons. In the case that a more robust accommodation plan is needed, the teacher will reach out to the student support coordinator (see below).
Extra Lesson Support
As needed, children in grades 6-8 participate in guided activities with a teacher or support staff member, designed to bolster core physical and cognitive skills.
Accommodation Plans and Extracurricular Tutoring
Our teachers are careful observers of their students and will provide reasonable accommodations in the classroom, as needed (see “In-Class Support” above). In the case that a student needs more robust and articulated support in order to complete the academic program, a teacher will reach out to the student support coordinator to create a formal accommodation plan. In some cases the plan will include extracurricular tutoring in addition to in-school accommodations.
SEL & Behavioral Support
Research has shown that an articulated program in social-emotional learning (SEL) can have long-term positive benefits for students. Our school uses Informed Adolescence, a carefully designed SEL curriculum for middle and high school developed by Heidi Sproull, LMSW, CST. The program covers topics like self awareness, healthy relationships, sexuality awareness, consent, communication clarity, and community building in a safe teacher-led setting.
We strive to create and maintain a culture of safety, kindness, respect, and responsibility by using the Three Care Streams process developed by Kim John Payne, M.ED. We encourage you to learn more about our holistic approach.
