Student Support in High School

Faculty Support

Our high school faculty is deeply committed to supporting each student’s healthy intellectual, social, and emotional growth. In and out of the classroom, teachers are continuously observing and evaluating their students' progress, and we collaborate extensively to create an environment in which every student is appropriately challenged and able to succeed.

Office Hours and Open Doors

When they are in need of individual assistance, high school students are warmly encouraged to seek out one-on-one time with their teachers. Some of our high school faculty hold scheduled office hours every week, while others are available as needed throughout the school day. The door to the faculty lounge is always open, and students are comfortable stopping by to request assistance from their teachers in any area, social or academic.

Homework Club

Overseen by our high school student support lead, homework club meets three times weekly after school. It is open to all grade levels and offers students both organization and academic support in completing their assignments.

Peer Tutoring

Senior volunteers help first- and second-year students with academic coursework and homework assignments through our collegial peer tutoring program, which provides free academic support to incoming students while offering 12th graders an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and service within the community.

Individual Student Support Meetings

When it comes to student support, we believe in taking a proactive approach. Our student support team conducts weekly one-on-one check-ins with students who require extra support in any area—social, behavior, or academic. For some students, these weekly check-ins can be a time to discuss an emotional issue, like anxiety, while others might use their meeting to work on organizational and executive functioning skills by creating a plan to complete the week’s homework assignments or to organize their backpack.

Accommodation Plans

Teachers work directly with students and their parents to provide reasonable accommodations to support student success in the classroom; for example, offering extra time to complete tests or homework assignments. In the case that a student needs more consistent support, the student support coordinator will create and implement a formal accommodation plan. In some cases the plan will include outside tutoring or the use of assistive technology (see below). In the case that a high school student requires more substantial accommodations, our support team will create a program that is compatible with the state of Michigan’s high school degree requirements.

Assistive Technology

A tactile, hands-on learning environment is a hallmark of the RSSAA high school curriculum. At the same time, we utilize assistive technology in the classroom when needed to support learning. Our teachers work specifically with Learning Ally, a technology tool for students who struggle with reading challenges and dyslexia.

College Counseling

We are committed to helping our students take the next step in their education. Like all aspects of our high school, our college counseling program is holistic and student-centered. Read more about how we prepare students to apply to and succeed in college and beyond.
